Current Issues

Enough is Enough: Protect Our Letter Carriers Act (H.R. 7629)

Since 2020, there have been more than 2,000 crimes committed against letter carriers on the job. Many of these attacks involve a gun or another weapon. This bipartisan legislation would address this problem by:

  • devaluing key infrastructure
  • deterring these crimes through increased prosecution and sentencing guidelines

Support the Federal Retirement Fairness Act (H.R. 5995)

This bipartisan bill would provide greater retirement security for federal employees, including Postal Service employees, who begin their federal/postal service in non-career positions. It would:

  • Modify what is considered creditable federal civilian service under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS)
  • Allow letter carriers, and other affected federal employees, the opportunity to purchase retirement credit for time spent in non-career positions, such as casuals, transitional employees (TEs) or city carrier assistants (CCAs)

Repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset. Support H.R. 82/S. 597.

Urge your elected officials to support the Social Security Fairness Act which would:

  • Repeal the Government Pension Offset (GPO)
  • Repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) titles of the Social Security Act

These provisions unfairly reduce or sometimes eliminate Social Security benefits for millions of federal workers, including letter carriers.

Expand care options for injured federal workers. Support H.R. 618/S. 131.

Postal employees account for nearly half of the claims made to the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs each year, and letter carriers file a majority of these claims. When letter carriers are injured on the job, it is critical for them to receive the care they need from their chosen provider.

Under current law, only physicians can treat federal workers compensation cases. Unfortunately, in many parts of the country injured letter carriers live in areas where there is a shortage of physicians who will treat injured federal workers.

The Improving Access to Workers' Compensation for Injured Federal Workers Act would expand care options by allowing nurse practitioners and physician assistants to:

  • prescribe or recommend treatment for injured federal workers
  • certify the nature of an injury and probable extent of disability
  • provide prescribed treatment for injured federal workers

Support the USPS Shipping Equity Act (H.R. 3721)

This bipartisan bill would allow the Postal Service to ship beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages directly from licensed producers and retailers to legal customers. The bill would:

  • generate an estimated $190 million annually in new revenue for the Postal Service
  • expand USPS's service options, especially for rural customers
  • allow wineries, breweries, and other producers to have goods delivered through USPS, instead of only private shippers

Support the continuation of USPS door delivery (H. Res. 376)

More than 35 million U.S. businesses and households receive mail at their doors six—and sometimes seven—days a week. Receiving mail, including bills, paychecks, medications, ballots and packages at the door is preferred by the public.

Continuing this essential service is critical to the economic success of the Postal Service.
